Kerry Donley appeared on News Channel 8 to discuss President Obama’s address and American’s are looking to hear. Kerry also comments on Republican governors not accepting stimulus package money and states that Virginians would like to see Republican candidate for Governor Bob McDonnell speak specifically on the issue.
Kerry Donley had a great time marching on the streets of Alexandria on Monday and would like to thank everyone who came out. Below are a couple pictures from the parade - but be sure to check out the rest over on our Alexandrians for Kerry Donley Facebook Group and Flickr page!
David Sachs, at the Alexandria Times, comments on Kerry Donley joining the Alexandria City Council Democratic ballot sharing:
Donley’s presence on the Democratic ballot brings the banker and former T.C. Williams athletic director back to local politics after a six-year hiatus. He has said his experience as a vice president at Virginia Commerce Bank will speak to the city’s budget woes, and that a major reason for running in the first place is Alexandria’s economic doldrums, expected to get worse before they get better. He had briefly contemplated running for 46th District delegate last year.
“I think the city’s got some tough times ahead and it got me thinking that it might be better to be one of seven members on the City Council, making concrete decisions affecting my community,” Donley said.
A practiced veteran in Alexandria politics, Donley said at the caucus that little changed in his campaign approach except for harnessing “a little more of an electronic, grassroots outlook” with a website and a plethora of emails sent to his constituents.
“Kerry was always one of the most forward-looking people on Council,” said Chair of the Alexandria Democratic Committee Susan Kellom. “He had inventive, smart, sharp ideas and a cool steady hand. I think it’s going to be reenergizing [to the Democratic party].”
Former mayor Kerry Donley won a place on the Democratic ticket Saturday night during the Alexandria Democratic Committee’s caucus, securing a position along with five incumbent candidates who will be running for reelection in May. Donley and the incumbents will face at least two Republicans in the May 5 general election — businessman Frank Fannon and real-estate agent Phil Cefaratti. Councilman Rob Krupicka received more votes than any other candidate, receiving about twice as many votes as real-estate investor Boyd Walker.
“There were a few voters who wanted to talk about issues like senior tax relief or industrial land use on the West End,” said Donley as he greeted voters at Minnie Howard Ninth Grade Center Saturday afternoon. “But for the most part, people already know who they are going to vote for.”
One of the top Virginia Democratic blogs, Left of the Hill, recently participated in an interview with Kerry Donley where they discussed Alexandria’s current economic situation, the current campaign for City Council, and many other issues. Left of the Hill concluded the post sharing:
Turning to the campaign side of the conversation, Kerry is confident about his chances in the caucus on Saturday the 31st but stressed that he needs every vote possible. Since the campaign is anticipating about 3000 to 3200 voters (past caucuses have seen 2500 to 3000), the final tallies will be close. When I asked him why people outside of Alexandria might want to pay attention to the race, he pointed out how Northern Virginia’s various communities do depend on one another. A traffic jam in Alexandria, for example, could have an impact on people who live in Vienna or Clifton. It is therefore in the best interests of all of NOVA for there to be elected officials who believe in investing in solid infrastructure. Kerry also pointed out that he is a past chair of the Northern Virginia Board of Transportation and did a lot of work in other jurisdictions as the Chair of the Democratic Party of Virginia, so he has built relationships with officials all across our community that are based on mutual respect.
At the end of our conversation I was impressed with Kerry Donely’s ideas and his past experience. He has proven to be a productive member of the Alexandria City Council and I encourage those of you who are registered in Alexandria to vote from him at the caucus on Saturday, January 31.
